You may not heard Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), but there is probably a bunch in your new phone - you allow that tiny accelerometers and gyroscopes required to detect the movement, such as your device swings. But last week students at the University of Twente a brand new micrometer scale shown system: a tiny musical instrument that plucks strings (those "flexures folded" above) a tenth of a human hair, the width. Six microscopic resonators fit on a microchip, a resonator per music sound and series of chips can be combined to play complete songs in a MIDI interface. Although the Micronium must be strengthened 10,000 times before they are heard by standard speakers, the instrument's the real Deal--see a variety of tunes (including some Mario Bros) play in a video after the break. A burning question remains: is this nano violin open source?
