'Steep' objectives (s) for electronics energy efficiency by 10 X, boost eliminate vampire power

European Union research initiative to increase targets electronic device efficiency by 10 X and eliminate power consumption of devices in standby mode

-EU-funded, Consortium of corporate research Europe-based organizations, major research institutes and universities
Researchers apply nanotechnology and low power consumption, costs, and battery life of electronic devices
Target voltage less than 0.5 volts, thereby reducing power consumption by an order of magnitude

LAUSANNE, Switzerland - 27 October 2010: today, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced a major research initiative, with several leading academic and corporate research organisations across Europe to the alarming increase of energy consumption by electronic devices from mobile phones to laptops, to address TV to supercomputers. The research project, called steep aims to eliminate these devices when active, efficiency energy power if you're in passive mode or standby mode by 10 times and practically.

Coordinated by the Federal Institute of technology de Lausanne (EPFL), project contains steeper leading corporate research organisations IBM Research - Zurich, Infineon and GLOBALFOUNDRIES * large research institutions CEA LETI and Forschungszentrum Julich, academic partners, University of Bologna, University Dortmund, University of Udine and the University of Pisa and the administrative support of SCIPROM.

Scientists working on the project is your expertise and your research for tunnel field effect transistors (TFETs) and semiconducting nanowires, the efficient use of energy in electronics to improve the challenge a leaky Wasserhahn-should tell-even if the valve to close, as far as possible dripping water weiterhin-- this is similar to today's transistor, in energy, constantly "leaky" lost or wasted when turned off.In steep, scientists not only hope, contain the leak by using a new method to close the valve or gate of the transistor firmly, but also open and close the door for maximum flow with less curves, i.e. less voltage for maximum efficiency.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), electronic devices currently power consumption is 15 percent budget and information and communication technologies and consumer electronics consumed energy will double by 2022 and triple 2030 to 1,700 Tera hour-this is just all responsible living total electricity consumption of the United States and Japan 2009(1).

The enormous amount of standby Verbrauch.Verwenden is especially wasteful in the European Union, it is estimated that standby power already for about 10 percent of the current accounts in homes and offices of the States(2)-Members.2020, It is expected that power consumption in standby mode/off mode almost synonymous will increase hours per year - 49 Terrawatt with annual power consumption for Austria, Czech Republic and Portugal combined(3).

"Our vision is to enable this research manufacturer uses Holy Grail in electronics to create the negligible energy, a computer if it in sleep mode, which we call the NULL Watt PC, to share", said Prof. Adrian M. Ionescu, nano lab, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, who coordinated the project. With the support of the European seventh framework programme (FP7) nanoscale devices for computer chips designed explore project of steeper researchers novel the operating voltage of less than 0.5 volts, allowing to reduce your energy consumption by an order of magnitude.

"" Power has become a major challenge for today's electronics as global, multiplied by the number of devices used by businesses and consumers"said who leads the nanoscale Electronics Group at IBM Research - Zurich Dr. Heike Riel.""Using our collective research in TFETs with semiconducting Nanowires that we want to significantly reduce the power consumption of the basic building blocks of integrated circuits, the smallest consumer electronics influence to massive, supercomputers."

The support of science

The development of innovative devices, such as the steep slope transistors from which it gets its name, provide a much more abrupt transition between the off and States compared with the current 60mV/decade limit of metal-oxide-semiconductor field - effect transistor (MOSFET) at room temperature.

This energy-efficient allows development at the same time to reduce the Sub-thresholds leaks and reduction of voltage Vorgangs.Die sub-thresholds transistors steep slope, on sub work can 0, 5V operation domain will be a critical factor in the success of the project.

To achieve this, scientists are studying the development of the so-called TFETs, silicon-based semiconducting (SI), Silicon Germanium (SiGe) and III-V Nanowires. Nanowires are cylindrical structures measuring only a few nanometers (nm) in diameter, the optimal electrostatic control of the transistor channel to allow in a TFET quantum mechanical band-to-tape is tunneling used to switch the system and to achieve a steeper turn on features compared to conventional MOSFETs.

Project steeper will assess efficient digital circuits the physical and practical limits of improving performance TFETs with III V nanowires and the resulting benefits for future energy.

The project started in June 2010 and will also continue for 36 months.

Sharp BDXL recorder at CEATEC, shows off 35 mm thin world does not cease question wondering why

Tim Stevens 2010 posted Oct 10th 9: 07 pm Sharp shows off 35mm thin BDXL recorder at Ceatec, world wonders why thinness in a portable device is an attribute with a value of desire. Thinness is another layer in your home entertainment center hoagie a little less attraktiv-- at least it is if it is about is a great compromise. This is the case with sharp's thinnest Blu-ray recorder, only 35 mm thick, yet capable of writing to BD-R discs or newer, more expensive, 100 GB BDXL discs. So far so good, but rather sad to make magic happen in a package so slim had the company having internal hard to dig, which is often the idea in these devices, you'll simply write BDXL's instead. Even with a stack of re Writeables nearby that much will be comfortable and much more expensive than a good ' ol pile of plates in turn. Of course, given with no price or release date, it is possible that this reduction of internal hardware with a reduction in the costs, but as we all know, it's pretty rare that a skinnier device costs less than its bigger bone brothers.

Steve Ballmer teases three AP mobile phones today, gets no respect from Matt Lauer

Tim Stevens posted Oct 11th 2010 8: 41 AM Steve Ballmer talks WP7 today on Today, gets no respect from Matt Lauer today is to be a big day for Microsoft and Steve Ballmer is kicking off early. Emerging on the today show, Samsung Cetus in hand, he released a modest smile and spent a little time showing off a trio of mobile phones. Together with the whale, a LG C900 on the right side is embedded in the middle in the picture below and who has a HTC Mondrian none gave as much face time as the man himself, on the left (tersely) polite ribbing of host Matt Lauer on the status of Microsoft's mobile efforts compared with the competition last year, even make mention of Ballmer's before recently cut bonus thanks partly to the kin debacle. Steve had none, that in hindsight not interested, showing off a "always consistent", the interface is easy "delicious" according to the man. How beautiful is it? SPEEDLINK cue does the multitouch hybrid mouse thing

By Paul Miller 2010 posted October 22nd 3: 07 PM honestly, while Apple's magic is a bit like a pioneer in the use of a multitouch surface on a "normal" tracking mouse mouse, it isn't easy or comfortable multitouch gestures to do it. Plus it, the small problem is no official driver for Windows. SPEEDLINK's cue mouse looks at least one of these problems, maybe even both will solve. The wireless 1000dpi optical mouse is PC compatible, to configure your own gestures with software so that you, and it has a slightly thinner and larger touch interface as the magic mouse that could make gestures a bit more doable. Basically it's somewhere between the magic mouse and the magic trackpad minus the hype and plus clear definition of the right and left click. It will retail for €40 if it in November (about $56 USD) ships.

Sprint's Hesse committed to phasing out iDEN

The difference between 1 G mobile and iDEN is of course keep iDEN or a very unique position in the market for wireless: although it sucks for data, it is really the only popular and successful way route push to talk over a cell network of any kind. For this purpose, that is companies actively keep bids, from CDMA 1 X extended now to build that others go in converting their PTT services over CDMA-based technology, the company which have the (already the first attempt, QChat, failed) allow. Switched on: A Looxcie in lifecasting the future

Every week Ross Rubin is a column about consumer technology turned on. Remember this early wireless headsets, who the people are looking as you Borg were assimilated by the had? Few would try back to those days to close a handset and ears. But what is if you could bypass also a mobile phone and your eyes? This is the promise of Looxcie bluetoooth headset essentially, a video camera enabling passive video capture integrated.

Looxcie's creator note that less stress than a Flip Camcorder requires even with the device. Still, there is no get to it - the Looxcie is no spy gadget. Accept the State of the art for what it is, the designer decided to embrace its size, rather than trying to minimize it.The hump, the boom Mike and lens of product the houses swells in the direction of an end, a light red recording enthält.Die extension in a shiny white, maybe a tribute to massive tele zoom lenses such as those from Canon.

The Looxcie cannot even though (even digital) zoomen.Es can rotate but about 10 degrees clockwise or counterclockwise to compensate for the position of head can for a solid preservative and finicky focal source. Despite its large size, the Looxcie is reasonably comfortable although position it so that the camcorder is recording what you see, can be difficult while retaining the earpiece into your ear.

The Looxcie is also a Bluetooth audio headset enhancement and collaborates the screen of the phone to create a kind of "DLR" (digital life recorder) .the usually well-designed Looxcie software maintains a cache of everything you observe when the camcorder is powered on. And just like most DVRs an "instant replay" feature, can save an instant clip by pressing a button on the bottom of the camera. Looxcie software can email these clips or by post to YouTube or Facebook, and the entire cache can be sent to a PC for further processing.

While the size and highlighting Looxcie hardware sure there will be a nonstarter for many, video quality is actually a larger obstacles-capture tops out at about 10 frames per second. This is no doubt in part (a) limit the Bluetooth connection between Telefon.vielleicht could Looxcie video quality improve by his record cache and clips to a MicroSD card in the headset and send clips to the phone after a short delay. As it stands now, however, Looxcie embodies a number of paradoxa. It is intended that spontaneity, but the stigma to capture its size disincentives use.And it allows you to not understand that you normally but in quality, you usually do.

However, you can see a few uses for Looxcie. These could include capturing events where generally more important than the video is - say, a presentation or Conference audio Panel.Another is where you expect something to happen, but you don't know like e.g. the whale watching cliché where everyone shoots, the animal is cresting gate (although here too a better mount only something like a Kodak PlaySport one would receive railing) cart when, it may be adventures in the casual sports coverage in the Looxcie that an alternative to active sports of cams of contours that generally on a helmet or other equipment must be mounted.

One Looxcie of real strengths is its ability to upload clips of course in near real time, where the low quality translated his clips into faster Uploads.Es YouTube makes a truer extension of "You" video to Facebook directly from your Gesicht.Once sends upon a time, collect cell phones and even digital cameras QVGA Stills.Wie Looxcie's video is better and his profile is small, it might be ephemeral moments, which are otherwise lost a viable tool for recording this would.

Sony Ericsson Z system: the PlayStation phone's gaming platform?

A bumper crop of circumstantial evidence that starts around the Android-based PlayStation phone together come heute-- when it rains it pours you pronounced - and a particularly interesting thread suggests that the ecosystem around it could be called "Z System". A clever tipster notes the term appears in the upper left corner of our recordings, a domain-Z-system.com Natürlich-- maps, is owned by Sony Ericsson. Turns out the company also makes for Z system in the United States and the Benelux Trade Mark Office (including presumably), were filed (and approved) in this year, and the submission category includes "software for interaction or play with electronic or video games," not hardware so strongly suggests we look at a platform here. Let's say it is possible that this specific device Z system called, but we go the theory that its actually underlying gaming platform, the this name-you may save a bonus game and set of software libraries that make a device the Z system will wear badges to float. As we have already seen with the BlackPad / SurfBook / textbook fiasco, not much matter, until a device is - but it's actually announced, to keep an eye.

Sony's Internet TV (powered by Google TV) first hands-on! (update: video)

We have taken just our unworthy eyes to the new Sony Internet TV, powered by Google TV (boy is that a mouthful) and it looks exactly the right kind of modern. We have to play a quick chance with the remote control and it definitely appeals to the nerd in uns--keep nice and use, although the optical mouse pad in the upper right corner was pretty shaky on the we tried units. (Sony chalk it up to RF interference, but we need to investigate further.) We will update you with some video so stay tuned!

Update: The video is up. Plus we have some thoughts for you double your pleasure: it's interesting how the user interface between the different TV sizes skaliert-- which sees search bar funny big on the larger TV sizes and just about right onto the medium sizes. While don't have to switch inputs, such as Sony and Google are so proud to say that there would be a clear resolution switch which app UI durchmacht-TV between live TV and the Google TV - 1080i, 720 p our guess.Something could be a real problem for Google TV is the lack of UI consistency. You are dealing with your DVR's UI, the Google search app maybe of TV search and record experience, the chrome browsing experience, and then independent user interface of a certain media (all the ones we were tempted considerably). You can also search, your recorded shows Google TV interface or your own DVRS from the UI that could among other overlapping functions as confusing if it not convenient. The image-in-picture feature, which is a simple right click is on the right d-pad to be likely a well worn option for TV users-while a show going live, something look up in the browser or in an app bread sort of this computer and butter is, and it's pretty easy to werden.der Sony keyboard feels remotely nicely in your hand, but it's pretty intuitive. Although of course position two thumbs up to the controls, thou shalt not, to use you at the same time - you can either under your right arrow the UI with the left thumb or control of the mouse with finicky optical pad.The two things on the right button are completely separated so that you use the arrows and accidentally click End Select, what always under the mouse pointer and one other way is totally geht.Es strange, especially since it's supposed to feel like a PS3 controller-a controller that typically used the two thumb controls together very effectively.Oh, and there are a million tiny buttons for everything all in any configuration make a ton of sense and some of them just total are mysterious - there no way you are going to get to do what the stars and fn keys right off the bat.
